Superior Hats icono

Whether you are looking for a Panama hat or a felt hat, the right fit is essential for both comfort and style. A well-fitting hat should rest comfortably on the head, without pinching or slipping.
If you are unable to visit our studio in southern Colombia for a personal fitting, which we would be happy to do, don’t worry, we are experienced hatmakers and will help you through the entire process. We recommend that you check out this brief guide to ensure a perfect fit when wearing your hat.
You will only need a mirror and a (dressmaker’s) flex.

1. Head Shape

Every person has a unique head shape, ranging from rounded to elongated ovals. Your specific shape is crucial for achieving the optimal hat fit.

There are three main head shape categories: round oval, regular oval, and long oval.

To define your head shape, you can follow these simple steps:

  • Smooth and flatten your hair to reveal the contours of your head. -Hint: Dampening hair can help it cling to your shape.
  • Have a friend photograph the top of your head from above, where the shape is clearly visible.
  • Does your head appear nearly circular (round oval), elongated (long oval), or somewhere in between (regular oval)?

While the regular oval is most common, it’s recommended to verify your exact shape for proper hat fitting. This ensures a tailored fit and optimal comfort when wearing your hat.

2. Hat Size

Please follow these 4 simple steps to get your right size:

  • Define at what height you want to wear the hat; it will depend on your preference to wear it, near the crown of the head or near the ears. There are no rigid rules about where to wear it, it’s up to you.
  • Measure your head circumference above your eyebrows and ears where the hat will rest. Repeat for the process for accuracy. Use a flexible tape, preferably a flexible (dressmaker’s) tape measure.
  • Check in the mirror or ask for help to look at the size of your head circumference, this is your exact size. You can take the measurement in inches or in centimeters, as you prefer then please check it in the size chart. If the measurement is in between, opt for the larger size.
  • Choose the size of your hat and trust us, we will make a hat that fits your head like a glove.

A properly fitted hat tailored to your unique size and head shape is key for optimal style, comfort and sophistication. When selecting headwear, carefully follow this expert measuring guidelines to determine your exact dimensions. Share these with us to receive custom-fitted perfection designed hat just for you.

Anatomy of a Superior Hat

A hat may seem like a simple thing, but it is actually made up of many different parts. Each part has a specific name and function. At our Superior hat factory, we carefully handcraft each part with great attention to detail.

The Crown

Is the top part of the hat, the area that sits on your head. The crown determines the basic shape and style of the hat.

The Pinch

Are the characteristic side dimples of the crown seen on most hat styles, except shapes like the Gambler or Pork Pie.

The Hat Band

Is the decorative strip of material around the crown on the line that divides it from the brim. We offer bands in various materials like cotton, rayon, leather, or fabric.

The Crease

Refers to the indentations along the crown that define the hat’s style. At Superior Hats we hand shape all styles, from classic Fedoras to cowboy or telescope shapes.

The Brim

Is the flat part that sticks out around the crown, complementing the style and protects from sun and rain. The size and shape of the brim varies by hat style and preferences.

The Bow

Is a decorative complement that closes the hat band on one side of the crown. We offer a wide variety, including origami-inspired folds.

The Edge

Is the circumference or border of the brim. It can be a natural edge of the fabric or have a binding, which is like a border made of another material sewn on for decoration.

The Liner

Is the soft fabric inserted into a felt hat’s crown, usually satin, velvet, synthetic mesh, cotton, or silk. We don’t put them on Panama Hats as it reduces ventilation.

The Sweatband

Is a leather strip that goes inside around the head. It helps the hat fit well and absorbs sweat for added comfort. At Superior Hats we are passionate about creating the finest quality in every hat detail!
