Frequently Asked Questions Hatmakers
Superior Hat Makers – Professional supplies for serious hatmakers.
ABOUT US
Who is Superior Hat Makers?
Superior Hat Makers is the professional supplies division of Superior Hats, a Colombian artisanal hat company with decades of experience producing high-end felt and paja toquilla hats entirely by hand. We supply hatmakers, custom hat shops, and brands worldwide with the same materials and tools we use in our own studio.
Are Panama Hats only made in Ecuador?
“Panama Hat” is a common name for any hat woven from paja toquilla (Carludovica palmata). The name became popular in the 19th century not because of its origin, but because the hats were widely sold and worn in Panama during the construction of the canal. Ecuador’s tradition is the best known, but it is far from the only one.
In Sandoná, Nariño, in southern Colombia, paja toquilla hat weaving has been a living tradition since the mid-19th century — so deeply rooted that by the early 1900s it was already an established craft passed down through generations. Our founder, Andrés, is himself a third-generation artisan in this tradition, carrying forward a lineage built on skill, patience, and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
Every hat body we supply is handwoven in Sandoná by master weavers who have spent years perfecting their craft. No machines. No shortcuts. Just the same technique, passed down and refined over generations.
PRODUCTS & MATERIALS
What products do you offer?
We offer felt blanks, paja toquilla blanks, blocking tools, hat blocks, and finishing supplies — everything a serious hatmaker needs to produce professional-quality hats. Whether you’re just starting out or running an established shop, we have a range of options to match your level.
What quality grades do you carry?
Our felt blanks come in a range of fur felt compositions, and our paja toquilla blanks are available in Semifino, Fino, and Superfino weaves. Each grade has distinct technical specifications — weight, fiber density, weave count — documented in our product sheets.
Do you carry paja toquilla / straw hat bodies?
Yes. Our paja toquilla hat bodies are handwoven in Sandoná, Nariño, Colombia — a region with an uninterrupted weaving tradition since the mid-19th century, so deeply rooted that by the early 1900s it was already a craft passed down through generations.
We offer three quality grades — Semifino, Fino, and Superfino — defined by fiber density (fibras/in²). Each grade has distinct weave variants: Liso (closed weave), Semicalado (open patterns in the crown), and Calado (open patterns in both crown and brim). No gum, no stiffener — just the fiber in its natural state, ready for your process.
Available in Ivory, Beige, and Walnut. Minor tonal variations between units are inherent to handcraft and not considered defects.
