Panama Hat Bodies Superfino Quality

What it is

Superfino is the finest of the three paja toquilla grades we work with. Where our fino grade reaches 17 strands per inch, superfino begins. The strands are split thinner and woven tighter, which gives the surface a close, even grain and a soft weight in the hand. A single body at this fineness can take a weaver in Sandona weeks to complete.

How fineness is measured

Fineness is counted, not estimated. We count the strands in one inch of weave: semifino runs from 12 to 15, fino from 15 to 17, and superfino begins at 17 and goes up from there. On superfino we also count the vertical strands and multiply the two, which gives the FPSI figure, fibers per square inch. Every superfino body is counted individually, so the number belongs to that piece and not to a batch.

Who it is for

For hatmakers and brands who finish their own hats and want a body that carries a refined weave from the start. It suits classic Panama shapes and contemporary designs alike, and it takes blocking, flanging and finishing the way a premium body should.

How it is made

Hand-woven in Sandona, Narino, by weavers who work only in paja toquilla. The craft of weaving, tejeduria, and the craft of finishing, sombreria, are separate disciplines, and this body is the work of the first. We offer three tones, and they are colored using natural dyeing techniques rather than industrial pigment. That is why the exact shade shifts from one production run to the next: it is the method showing in the material, not an inconsistency.

How to order

Because stock changes with what our weavers are producing, we do not sell these directly from the page. Tell us the tone, fineness and dimensions you are looking for through Request a Quote, and we will show you what is available now. Hat bodies do not include free shipping: the cost depends on destination and box size, and we send you a secure payment link once the order is agreed.
